Day 2

Subject: Do you have what it takes to lead, [firstname]?

Hi [firstname],

Yesterday I mentioned that there are certain character traits that set good leaders apart from the rest of the pack, and I want to cover some of them in today's installment.

Perhaps the most important character trait is positivity. Nobody wants to follow a “doom-monger”. Have you ever noticed how politicians always peddle upbeat messages in their campaigns? Remember Barack Obama's relentless “Yes we can!” and Donald Trump's “Make America great again!”? Nobody would have voted for a president whose mantra was “No we can't” or “Take America down some more”.

A positive attitude can go a long way. Good leaders are able to laugh at themselves when something doesn't go quite as planned; this helps to create a happy and healthy atmosphere, even during busy, stressful periods.

Another key character trait is trustworthiness. People not only need to be assured that their leader will keep any promises made, but also that they're someone who can be confided in without using that information to an unfair advantage. A good leader is honest and tells it like it is – even when that's something his/her followers don't want to hear.

Integrity is also another key character trait shared by good leaders. A person with integrity demonstrates sound moral and ethical principles and does the right thing, no matter who's watching. Integrity is the foundation on which good leadership is built. People with integrity have a sound moral compass and are reliable, responsible and accountable – all important leadership character traits. They stand up for what is right, and inspire others to do so too. A good leader leads by example.

Do any of these character traits describe you? If so, you've got what it takes to be a good leader.

Warmly,

[Your Name]
